why doubling time, and not a growth rate
People systematically under-read exponentials when they're given a percentage — the bias shrinks sharply when the same fact is stated as a doubling time. So this is the honest framing and the legible one at once. The gap between two dots is the real interval; where the catalog has fewer than two measured intervals the clock says so rather than inventing a slope.

why this looks different from every other chart
Shown on the real, linear scale, the way most charts don't. A logarithmic axis flattens this same wall into a gentle, misleading climb — flip it above to see that trick. The gap between the two is why the pace feels slower than it actually is.

Dashed segments are honest projections with a widening cone of uncertainty; numbered dots mark the breakthroughs that bent a curve.
Faster is higher. A sloped line appears only where the catalog has ≥2 measured intervals; a single from→to pair shows one flat bar stamped "slope unknown," because two points can't prove acceleration.
