A 6,000-cubic-kilometre magma body under Tuscany, found by listening to background noise
Researchers from the University of Geneva, Italy's CNR Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology have mapped roughly 6,000 cubic kilometres of volcanic fluids beneath Tuscany, sitting 8 to 15 kilometres down. The work is published in Communications Earth & Environment.
The method deserves as much attention as the finding. The team used ambient noise tomography — roughly 60 high-resolution sensors listening to the constant background vibration produced by ocean waves, wind and human activity, then inferring structure from where seismic waves slow down. No drilling, no explosives, no active source. It is a cheap way to see through several kilometres of rock, and cheap subsurface imaging is a general-purpose capability rather than a one-site result.
That is where the abundance argument sits. The authors name two applications directly: locating geothermal reserves, and locating deposits of lithium and rare earth elements. Geothermal is the clean generation source that does not care whether the sun is up, and it has always been limited less by technology than by the cost of knowing where to drill. Mineral prospecting has the same bottleneck. A method that maps both from passive listening lowers the exploration cost for two inputs the energy transition needs.
The researchers state plainly that the system does not currently represent a threat. Nothing here is a producing well, a resource estimate or a drilling programme — it is a map, and the distance between a map and a megawatt is measured in years.
