MANY MINDEDA Chinese city ties AI compute straight to its renewable plants
The eastern Chinese city of Changzhou, in Jiangsu province, says it has started building what it calls the country's first city-level 'green token factory' for AI computing. The municipal government announced the project on Sunday at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, a day after signing an agreement that brings in seven parties, among them Alibaba Cloud and Wangsu Science and Technology.
The plan pairs AI compute with clean generation. Once complete, the facility is meant to turn out 60 trillion tokens a year, powered by green energy and wired directly to renewable plants under a national policy that lets green power bypass the public grid. The city says the design should lift token output by 62.5% from the same computing resources.
If it works as described, tying inference to dedicated renewables attacks two costs at once — the electricity bill and the carbon behind each token. Cheaper, cleaner tokens make the raw material of AI a little more available, which is why the sector matters for both energy and access to knowledge.
The caveats are real. The numbers and claims come from the city's own statement, there is no completion timeline, and the site is described as under construction rather than running.
