A cooling geothermal plant in New Mexico doubles output after a deeper well
Zanskar bought the Lightning Dock geothermal plant in New Mexico in June 2024, when it was failing because its reservoir water was cooling fast. Temperatures had dropped about 50 degrees Fahrenheit over five years, roughly 10 degrees a year against a typical decline of 1 to 2 degrees. Water entering the plant was 250 degrees Fahrenheit, well below the 310-degree design requirement. The plant, online since 2013, ran on two production wells about 2,500 feet deep.
Zanskar drilled a new well reaching 8,000 feet, deeper than the typical 3,000-to-5,000-foot geothermal field. It started operating in May 2025 and, a full year later, still flows at more than 4,000 gallons per minute. Over the past year Lightning Dock produced more than twice the electricity it would have with the old wells. The plant has 15 megawatts of capacity feeding the local grid, roughly enough for 11,000 homes.
The abundance angle is reuse. Geothermal offers round-the-clock clean power, and reviving an existing plant with better exploration and drilling is cheaper than building new. If declining plants can be resurrected rather than abandoned, more baseload clean capacity comes online faster and at lower cost.
This is one small plant, and CEO Joel Edwards notes that long time frames are needed to trust performance. Deeper drilling usually means tighter rock and less flow, though here flow rose instead. Whether the approach transfers to other cooling sites is the open question.
