A hydrogen turbine that makes its own pressure ran for 303 seconds

Karlsruhe researchers generated electricity from a turbine with no mechanical compressor, beating a NASA duration record. No power or efficiency figure was published.

Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology say they have generated electricity from a hydrogen gas turbine that has no mechanical compressor, running it for 303 seconds. The previous benchmark for this class of machine was a NASA run of 250 seconds.

The mechanism is the point. A conventional gas turbine spends a large share of its own output driving the compressor that pressurises incoming air — the KIT team put the figure at about 50%. This design instead generates its working pressure from detonation waves inside the combustor, so the parasitic load that compression represents is removed rather than reduced. If that holds at scale, it changes the arithmetic of hydrogen as a dispatchable power source, which currently loses on round-trip efficiency at almost every step.

That is the case for paying attention. Here is the case for patience. The source is a university press release with no journal citation, and it publishes no power output and no efficiency percentage — the two numbers that would tell you whether the removed compressor load actually showed up as useful electricity. A duration record on a laboratory rig is a long way from a machine that runs on a grid, and 303 seconds is five minutes.

What would move this from interesting to material: a peer-reviewed result, a stated efficiency, and a run measured in hours rather than minutes.
