A navigation-guided robot aims to steer feeding tubes away from the lungs
ENvue Medical has introduced ENvue Drive, a robotic-assisted device for placing feeding tubes, built on the company's electromagnetic navigation platform. The system pairs AI, real-time navigation, and robotic execution in one workflow, and the company positions it as a way to make a common bedside procedure more precise. The underlying navigation platform already holds 510(k) FDA clearance and is in use in U.S. hospitals; ENvue Drive itself is a recent unveiling, and the company says it plans to pursue additional clearances in coming years.
The technical case rests on replacing a blind procedure with a guided one. Feeding tubes are usually pushed through the nose while the operator relies on experience and felt resistance. ENvue Drive uses a sensor at the tube's tip refreshing about 40 times per second, moves in five degrees of freedom, and offers steering directions the company likens to GPS. ECG sensors track patient movement, and the system alerts the clinician when the tube nears somewhere it should not go, while the operator stays in control.
More than a million feeding tubes are placed in U.S. patients each year, often by nurses and dietitians. CEO Doron Besser says 3% to 5% are misplaced into the lungs, which can cause serious harm. Cutting that error rate would make a routine, high-volume care task safer and less dependent on individual operator skill.
The misplacement figures and clinical claims come from the CEO, not independent trials, and ENvue Drive is not yet separately cleared. Worth watching: regulatory clearance, real-world results, and the company's stated ambition to extend the platform to vascular catheters.
