A star's death exposed a supermassive black hole 30,000 light-years off-centre
Astronomers at the University of Maryland, led by Robert David Stein, have found a supermassive black hole sitting 9.3 kiloparsecs — about 30,000 light-years — from the centre of its galaxy. It is the first dormant black hole of its class detected this far from a galactic core. Its mass is described as comparable to the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. The work appeared in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on July 27 as "TDE 2025abcr: A Tidal Disruption Event in the Outskirts of a Massive Galaxy".
A dormant black hole emits nothing, so it can only be found when something falls in. This one revealed itself by tearing apart a passing star, a tidal disruption event, which produced a flare bright enough for the Zwicky Transient Facility at Palomar to catch. The detection method is the part with a wider lesson: an AI program trained to recognise tidal disruption events went into operation in August 2025 and identified this one three months later, from a survey that produces far more transients than any team can inspect by hand.
This moves no cost curve and we score it a 2 for that reason. It belongs on the feed anyway, because the pattern underneath it is the one this site keeps finding in every field — the instrument was already collecting the data, and what changed was the cost of looking at all of it.
