After Six Years Paralyzed, a Brain Implant Lets Him Feed Himself and Feel Again

A brain-computer interface bypassing a spinal injury let Keith Thomas move his arms, feed himself, and feel touch — with some function persisting when it's off.

Keith Thomas of Massapequa, New York was paralyzed from the chest down in a swimming accident six years ago. At the start of his trial he could not lift his arms off his wheelchair. In 2021 he agreed to test a brain-computer interface, and surgeons implanted electrodes in his brain. The account was published by The Guardian, dated 17 July 2026.

The system bypasses his spinal cord injury: signals from his brain are read and routed around the damaged spinal pathway to drive movement. After surgery and many months of training, he was able to move his arms and hands, feed himself, and drink from a cup. The interface also sent signals back into his brain to recreate the sensation of touch — he was able to feel his sister's hand and his dog's fur. Notably, the technology appears to have partly rewired his nervous system, with some hand function and sensation persisting even when the system is switched off.

For care, the stakes are basic independence. Feeding oneself, drinking, and feeling a touch are the daily acts that decide whether a person needs constant assistance. Restoring even part of that shifts the burden of care and returns dignity that no external aid fully replaces.

This is a single-patient case, and the rewiring effect is described only as apparent. Whether the persistent gains hold up, and whether the approach generalizes to other patients, remains to be seen across larger trials.
