Basel Action Network estimates AI infrastructure will produce 395 to 617 million tonnes of electronic waste between 2025 and 2050. This volume—enough to fill 15 to 23 million standard shipping containers—would stretch 244,000 km end-to-end, matching six times Earth's circumference. The projection covers networking, power distribution, backup systems, servers, accelerators, and cooling equipment. BAN's model assumes rapid hardware turnover: GPUs replace every 2–3 years versus 5–7 years for traditional servers, with networking infrastructure cycling every 3–4 years.

The estimate relies on industry expansion plans rather than actual deployed infrastructure. It further assumes equipment decommissioning occurs within years—not decades—due to AI's fast obsolescence cycle. Crucially, no hyperscaler, government, or international body has published waste management strategies for these projected volumes.
