Airbus is flight-testing a wing too long for the airports it uses
Airbus used the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2026 to reveal the flight-test phase of its Wing of Tomorrow programme, which is developing high-aspect-ratio composite wings for the next generation of single-aisle aircraft. The company's target is a double-digit percentage reduction in fuel burn and emissions, achieved by cutting aerodynamic drag with a longer, slenderer wing. On an A321neo demonstrator the design would extend the baseline span by up to 5 metres per wingtip.
That extension runs straight into an infrastructure limit. ICAO Code C gate and taxiway constraints cap single-aisle aircraft at a 36-metre wingspan, and the new wing exceeds it — so an aircraft using it would need folding wingtips to operate at the airports it is meant to serve. Airbus describes this as introducing a fresh set of aerodynamic challenges, with weight and structural integration to be balanced against the drag saving.
Flight testing runs over the next three years, using demonstrator wings that are not folding but share the aerodynamic characteristics of the folding design.
Fuel is the largest single operating cost in aviation, so a double-digit cut is the difference between long-distance travel being rationed by price and being something more people can do. But the figure is Airbus's own target, not a measured result, and the folding mechanism — the part that decides whether any of it is usable at a real airport — has not yet flown.
