Amazon and Constellation agree to expand Maryland nuclear plant with 20-year power deal

Planned expansion of clean energy capacity for Maryland households

Amazon and Constellation Energy signed a 20-year power purchase agreement to expand Maryland’s Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center. The deal adds approximately 190 MW of new generating capacity to the plant—Maryland’s largest source of clean energy—which will come online between 2030 and 2032. When operational, the expanded facility will generate electricity for about 1.3 million homes and supply roughly 80% of Maryland’s clean energy needs. The agreement also includes over $3 billion in Maryland infrastructure investments.

This planned expansion could eventually increase affordable, reliable electricity access for Maryland households and businesses while advancing climate goals. However, the publication date (October 5, 2026) appears to be a future date relative to current context, meaning the project remains in development and not yet operational. The full impact on clean energy access will depend on the timeline for new capacity coming online.
