The Open Source Imaging Initiative has developed a portable MRI scanner called the OSI2 ONE, built around a 3D-printed core, that can be assembled for under $70,000. For comparison, brand-new full-sized MRI machines start at roughly $1.1 million and can top $3 million per unit. Even refurbished machines begin around $100,000, before the cost of the specialized room they require. The device has already been replicated multiple times around the world.

The trade-off is field strength. The OSI2 ONE runs at 50 millitesla, against the 1.5 to 3 tesla of clinical machines. That means lower spatial resolution and a weaker signal-to-noise ratio, and the article is blunt that a portable low-field scanner will never match a full-sized unit. One proposed remedy is AI trained on high-field data or physics models to sharpen low-field images — but that suggestion comes from an X post by analyst Brian Roemmele, not peer-reviewed validation.

If the diagnostic quality holds up, the economics matter enormously. Imaging is one of the sharpest access divides in medicine, and a scanner at a fraction of the price, without a dedicated shielded room, changes what clinics in low-resource regions can offer at all.

What to watch is whether the AI-enhancement path is validated in clinical studies rather than asserted. Some commenters also doubt the device would clear highly regulated first-world medical environments. The project is explicitly targeted at underserved and low-budget settings, where a rough image beats no image.
