Arkansas breaks ground on a record-scale solar and storage plant
Cypress Creek Energy and Google marked the start of construction on the first two phases of the Steel River Energy Center in Arkansas, which the company describes as the largest US solar project to date. The initial phases will deliver 1.6 gigawatts of solar generation and 1.9 gigawatt-hours of battery storage.
The full three-phase project is planned to provide 2.5 gigawatts of solar and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of storage by 2029. Cypress Creek says the completed facility would generate enough electricity to power more than 315,000 Arkansas homes annually. The pairing of large-scale solar with batteries is the part that carries weight: storage lets cheap daytime generation cover evening demand, smoothing out the intermittency that has limited solar's role on the grid.
Projects at this scale push down the cost of electricity and add capacity that competitors can draw on, which is why it touches the broader commons as well as energy. Once built, the marginal cost of solar power is very low, and that tends to hold down prices across a regional market.
Worth watching is whether the construction timeline holds through 2029 and how the storage performs in practice. The figures and the "largest to date" claim come from a Cypress Creek statement, so they are the developer's characterization rather than independently verified totals.
