Balcony solar gets a plug-and-play inverter aimed at U.S. renters
APsystems has launched the EZ1-LV, a dual-module microinverter aimed at DIY and balcony solar setups in the U.S. The unit delivers up to 900 VA of continuous AC output and is built for balconies, gardens, garages, and carports rather than standard rooftop arrays. An optional five-meter extension cable with a standard 120 V plug lets it connect into a household wall socket.
Each of its two channels supports independent maximum power point tracking and modules rated from 315 Wp to more than 660 Wp. The weatherproof enclosure is cooled by natural convection and rated from -40°F to +149°F. It offers Bluetooth and Wi-Fi monitoring through an app that manages up to four units, and it carries CSA C/US listing with compliance to UL 1741, IEEE 1547, and NEC arc-fault and rapid-shutdown rules across editions from 2014 through 2023. The warranty runs 12 years.
The significance is who this reaches. Rooftop solar assumes you own a roof. A plug-in unit sized for a balcony extends distributed generation to renters and apartment dwellers who have been shut out of self-generation, letting them shave part of their electric bill without an installer or a permit-heavy retrofit. That widens access to cheaper power beyond homeowners.
The caveat is regulatory. Balcony solar is well established in parts of Europe but remains a legal gray area in much of the U.S., where plugging generation into a household circuit often runs against interconnection rules. All specifications here come from the manufacturer, and adoption will depend on whether local codes catch up.
