Brazil moves to embed genomics inside its universal health system

The Genomas Brasil program aims to build population-scale precision medicine into the country's public health service.

Nature Medicine describes Genomas Brasil, a program building precision public health within the country's Unified Health System, the universal service that covers the population free at the point of care. The idea is to embed population-scale genomics into public healthcare rather than leaving precision medicine to private providers.

Most genomic medicine so far has developed inside wealthy, often private, systems. Placing it within a universal public service is a different bet: that the data and the resulting tailored care can be made available to a whole population regardless of ability to pay.

This advances both health and knowledge — it aims to make precision medicine a public good and to build a genomic dataset drawn from a large and diverse population, which itself has research value. It is a program under development, not a delivered service, and the scale of such efforts takes years to prove out.
