BYD Atto 8's 9-minute EV charging breakthrough

BYD's flagship e-SUV achieves 10% to 97% battery charge in 9 minutes, making rapid EV charging practical for daily use.

BYD's Atto 8 e-SUV, the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer's flagship model, achieves 10% to 97% battery charge in 9 minutes using a 115-kilowatt-hour battery. This performance—drawing up to 1,500 kilowatts of power from a single connector—enables the vehicle to reach 20% to 97% charge in just 12 minutes even at -22 °F (-30 °C). With order books opening in early 2027, the Atto 8 represents a significant step toward practical daily EV use by drastically reducing charging time barriers. BYD also plans to install 3,000 ultra-fast charging stations globally within one year to support this capability.

The Atto 8's rapid charging is the key mechanism for moving mobility abundance. By cutting the time between charging sessions from hours to minutes, it addresses the primary friction in EV adoption: the need for extended downtime. This makes electric vehicles viable for frequent daily use without compromising practicality, directly supporting the need for affordable, accessible transportation. The 3,000-station rollout further scales this capability, potentially reducing charging infrastructure costs per user.

What to watch: Real-world performance under varied conditions and the pace of ultra-fast charging station deployment. The WLTP range figures are subject to real-world driving, and charging performance is based on official specifications. While the Atto 8's 9-minute charge is a major advance, its impact on widespread mobility access depends on the speed of station installation and adoption across different climates.
