BYD's electric kei car undercuts Japanese rivals at home

BYD launched the Racco electric minicar in Japan starting near $13,100, entering a segment that makes up 40% of the country's new car sales.

BYD launched the Racco, an all-electric kei car, in Japan on Tuesday. The entry-level Racco 200 starts at 2.145 million yen, roughly $13,100, and drops below 2 million yen after a 150,000-yen government subsidy. It offers a 210 km WLTC range from a 22.4 kWh battery. Two higher trims, the 300 Plus and 300 Premium, use a 35.84 kWh LFP battery rated at 320 km, which BYD says makes the Racco the first kei EV in Japan to exceed 300 km of range.

The pricing lands under Japanese competitors: Nissan's Sakura starts around 2.44 million yen with 180 km of range, and Honda's N-ONE e: begins near 2.7 million yen. Kei cars account for nearly 40% of new vehicle sales in Japan, a segment where Toyota's Suzuki and Daihatsu units plus Honda control about 80% of the market, per Bloomberg Intelligence.

Affordable range in the country's most popular vehicle class matters for mobility access. A sub-$13,000 electric city car with over 200 km of range brings electric driving within reach for buyers who need short, cheap daily transport rather than a premium EV. Price competition in a segment dominated by three domestic makers tends to push all of them toward better value.

What to watch is uptake and whether incumbents respond on price. BYD entered Japan's passenger market in January 2023 and has not announced plans to sell the Racco in China.
