MANY MINDEDCEPI Releases Merck Ebola Vaccine Doses for DRC Frontline
CEPI released 70,000 doses of Merck's Ervebo Ebola vaccine for use in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This includes 50,000 doses for frontline workers and 20,000 for clinical trials in the outbreak zone. The deployment occurs as DRC reports 5,200 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,476 deaths through August 18, 2026.
The vaccine targets the specific Ebola virus strain circulating in DRC, distinct from the Bundibugyo virus causing the current outbreak. CEPI is simultaneously funding studies to analyze blood samples for potential cross-protection between Ebola and Marburg viruses, though this work remains in early analysis stages.
This rapid deployment directly reduces mortality risk in high-exposure settings by providing immediate vaccine access where outbreak activity is concentrated. It addresses acute mortality in DRC's current outbreak through targeted distribution, though the vaccine does not cover the Bundibugyo virus strain currently active.
