Childcare tax deduction expands for early educators
The Supporting Early-Childhood Educators' Deductions Act (SEED Act) took effect on September 18, 2026. It extends a tax deduction allowing early childhood educators to claim $350 per tax year for classroom supplies. Eligibility requires facilities serving more than two children under age six who do not live there.
The law directly addresses financial barriers for educators. Studies show 91% of early educators spend their own money annually on materials, while home-based staff typically spend about $300 per year. Educators earning less than $35,000 annually spend roughly $200 of their own funds on supplies. Bluff's Little Thinkers in western Iowa—a facility serving 72 children across five classrooms—qualifies for the deduction.
This change improves workforce stability and early childhood education quality by reducing the financial burden on educators. It moves abundance toward more reliable childcare systems by making classroom materials expenses less prohibitive for workers.
Key caveats: The deduction applies only to facilities receiving fees or public funding, as with Head Start programs. Not all childcare providers qualify.
