MANY MINDEDChina ships 3,750 tonnes of green ammonia to South Korea
State Power Investment Corp shipped 3,750 tonnes of green ammonia from Lianyungang, in Jiangsu province, to South Korea on July 28, which the company says is the largest single-batch export of green ammonia on record. The cargo came from a project that entered commercial operation in July 2025.
The plant is the substance behind the shipment. It is supported by 800 MW of dedicated renewable capacity and integrates renewable power, hydrogen and ammonia production under one coordination and control system, designed for 32,000 tons of green hydrogen and 180,000 tons of green ammonia a year. The company claims five world records for the facility, including the largest single-unit green ammonia production plant.
Ammonia is fertiliser and shippable fuel at the same time, which is why an export cargo matters beyond the energy column. It shows clean ammonia moving between countries the way fossil-derived ammonia already does, and the cost of nitrogen fertiliser sits underneath the cost of food. One shipment does not make a market, but it proves the chain end to end.
The caution comes from the same roundup: twelve leading European renewable hydrogen projects are under construction, about 3 GW of electrolysis and an estimated €13 billion, and analysts there argue the hydrogen market is currently being built by regulation ahead of organic demand, leaving a persistent gap between project pipelines and what gets executed by 2030. Watch for repeat cargoes and an unsubsidised buyer.
