China's businesses are embedding AI access into daily consumption through token systems tied to coffee, credit cards, and food. By mid-2026, daily token consumption reached 500 trillion — a 5,000-fold increase from early 2024. This expansion includes partnerships like Moonshot AI’s credit card offering Kimi tokens with Agricultural Bank of China and American Express, China Merchants Bank’s 1.8 billion tokens for MiniMax models, and subsidies up to 3 billion tokens for Alibaba’s Qwen. Retail programs are widespread: China Telecom’s 9.9 yuan ($1.40) monthly plans for 10 million tokens, China Mobile’s 400,000 tokens for 1 yuan (14 cents) in Shanghai, and Beijing’s AGI Bar providing unlimited DeepSeek V4 Flash access for coffee and Wi-Fi users. The system leverages open-source models that cost 60–90% less than Western alternatives, making AI tools accessible through everyday transactions.
This model transforms AI access into a consumption-based utility. Instead of upfront costs, users earn tokens through purchases — from dumpling meals at Jingu Yuan (10 yuan worth of credits) to coffee shops in Changsha and token loans for startups in Guangzhou. The scale suggests mass adoption is accelerating, with daily distributions exceeding 100 tokens across two dumpling locations.
For abundance, this reduces barriers to AI tools for low-income users. By tying tokens to routine spending, it creates a pathway for affordable AI access without requiring technical expertise or upfront investment. However, the unverified real-world impact — whether users actually apply these tokens to meaningful AI tasks — remains unclear. What moves abundance here is the shift toward embedded, low-cost access, but the actual utility for everyday needs depends on how widely tokens are used beyond transactional exchanges. What to watch: Whether token programs translate into practical AI applications rather than isolated consumption habits.
