Anthropic launched its Model Hardware Standard on September 4, 2026, allowing AI agents to autonomously control lab equipment and execute experiments. The system reduces integration time from weeks or months to minutes by using standardized 'read' and 'write' commands instead of proprietary interfaces. Users specify hardware parameters in natural language to generate reference files, and Anthropic observed Claude manipulating microscope mirrors and lasers to identify structures in live brain tissue during a neuroscience experiment. The technology enables AI to orchestrate complex processes across multiple instruments.
This approach could lower barriers to scientific discovery by enabling researchers without dedicated labs to conduct experiments. By standardizing hardware communication, it potentially reduces costs for specialized equipment access and accelerates collaborative work. However, the initial rollout is limited to select partners for safety validation, requires programmable hardware interfaces, and has not yet achieved full deployment across all lab equipment types.
