Dongfeng builds its own 1,500-kW EV charger to match BYD

Dongfeng unveiled an in-house 1,500-kW charger, matching BYD's flash unit and pushing EV refueling toward gas-station speed.

Dongfeng has unveiled its first in-house ultra-high-power EV charger, rated at a single-gun peak of 1,500 kW. Shown July 29 at the company's Global Innovation Center, the pile uses a 1.2 MW host unit expandable to 2.4 MW and above, delivers up to 1,500 amps per gun across a 150 V to 1,000 V range, and is stated to run at no less than 96.7 percent efficiency. Dongfeng says it is among the first Level 1 energy-efficiency chargers under China's new GB 46519-2025 standard.

The 1,500 kW figure matches BYD's second-generation flash charging pile, revealed in March. Dongfeng is also developing a next-generation charger with integrated energy storage spanning 720 kW to 2.4 MW, alongside a kilovolt e-drive using 1,500 V-rated silicon-carbide modules with 300 kW peak output and 30 percent higher power density than its predecessor.

The consequence for mobility is straightforward: charging that approaches the speed of a fuel stop removes one of the most persistent barriers to EV adoption. When a battery can take on meaningful range in minutes rather than tens of minutes, the practical gap between electric and combustion refueling narrows, and the case for owning an EV strengthens for people without home charging.

What to watch is buildout. The efficiency and power-density numbers come from Dongfeng itself and are not independently verified. Hardware alone does not make a network; BYD, by its own statement, plans 20,000 flash charging stations in China by the end of 2026, and Dongfeng's rollout scale is not yet clear.
