Early Avian Flu Detection System Targets Poultry Farms

Alveo Technologies and AgriNerds' partnership enables poultry farms to detect avian influenza in 45 minutes with 96-99% accuracy for H5/H7 subtypes, using swabs and waterfowl proximity data.

Alveo Technologies and AgriNerds have partnered to deploy an avian influenza early warning system for poultry farms. Alveo’s portable molecular diagnostics platform identifies influenza in 45 minutes using oropharyngeal swabs in the U.S. and cloacal swabs elsewhere, distinguishing H5 and H7 subtypes with 96-99% accuracy. AgriNerds’ Waterfowl Alert Network predicts waterfowl proximity to farms with low/moderate/high risk classifications. The system is operational across 1,500+ farms in 25 U.S. states. Alveo’s platform is available in several countries but remains pending USDA approval as of August 2026.

This system addresses critical gaps in poultry disease response by enabling rapid, subtype-specific detection before outbreaks escalate. By identifying high-risk waterfowl proximity early, it reduces the likelihood of catastrophic poultry losses that threaten food security and zoonotic transmission. The 96-99% accuracy for H5/H7 subtypes—key drivers of severe outbreaks—means farms can act before widespread contamination occurs.

For food security (SUSTENANCE), this reduces the risk of sudden poultry supply disruptions. For health (HEALTH), it lowers zoonotic transmission risks by catching outbreaks earlier. The system does not prevent outbreaks but enables faster intervention. Next steps include USDA approval and refining risk classifications using dynamic factors like weather and water availability. The current status is operational in the U.S. but pending regulatory clearance.
