For an average US grid and average-selling SUV over a 16-year lifespan, scrapping a gas car two years after purchase and replacing it with an electric vehicle reduces cumulative emissions by 44%. Swapping earlier—within one year—cuts emissions by 58% in 92% of cases. These benefits vanish when electric vehicles exceed 30 kWh per 100 km on grids emitting over 500 kg CO2 per megawatt-hour, or for plug-in hybrids, SUVs, and cars driven below national average mileage on high-emission grids. The study, published in *Science* and led by Elliott Campbell at UC Santa Cruz, assumes vehicles are scrapped rather than resold and excludes resale value effects.

This mechanism accelerates climate action by decoupling emissions reductions from vehicle age. Instead of waiting for gas cars to reach end-of-life, owners can achieve significant cuts through early swaps—a practical pathway for faster grid decarbonization. For communities reliant on fossil-fueled grids, this approach could lower long-term energy costs by reducing the carbon burden on power generation.
