Early study hints at possible survival boost for glioblastoma patients after COVID-19 vaccination

Preliminary analysis of 187 glioblastoma patients shows vaccinated patients had significantly longer survival after surgery than unvaccinated peers, but researchers stress no causal link was proven.

A preliminary analysis of 187 glioblastoma patients published at medRxiv.org in 2026 found those vaccinated with COVID-19 within 100 days before surgery had a median survival of 743 days—compared to 349 days for unvaccinated patients. The benefit was observed exclusively for COVID-19 vaccines, not flu, pneumonia, or shingles vaccines. Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and University of Florida College of Medicine conducted this analysis.

The study does not establish that vaccination caused the survival difference. It notes surgical procedures and healthcare access variations likely influenced results, and cannot rule out that patients who received vaccines were already healthier or had better treatment pathways. Crucially, the research remains unpeer-reviewed and has not triggered any clinical trials to test vaccine effects on brain cancer patients.

While this finding could theoretically improve survival outcomes for a deadly cancer, it currently offers no direct pathway to free or universal access to cancer care. The benefit remains unproven in independent studies and requires rigorous validation before clinical application. For now, it represents a promising but unverified signal in the complex relationship between vaccination and cancer outcomes.
