Electric Tractor Prototype Targets Smallholder Farmers
GoSun, an American company, developed the Moonrider 27 electric tractor—manufactured in India and distributed across North America by GoSun—to serve small-scale farmers. It features a 27-hp (20-kW) motor and an optional 1,100-watt solar roof that unfolds into wing-like panels. The tractor can trickle-charge while operating or parked and plug into standard outlets for faster top-up. Targeting routine tasks like mowing, tilling, and hauling, it is scheduled for market launch in early 2027 at US$19,995. Electric tractors currently account for less than 1% of sales in major global farming markets, though competitors like Dutch E-Horse (€99,500) and American e2T (~US$7,500 with solar canopy) offer lower price points. GoSun states no independently verified data exists on real-world range, charging times, or operational cost comparisons against diesel tractors.
This design addresses energy volatility for smallholders by shifting tasks from diesel to electric systems with solar supplementation. While the solar roof supports incremental charging, it is not the primary power source—meaning the tractor still relies on grid electricity for full operation. For small farmers in regions with limited diesel access, the Moonrider 27 could lower fuel costs and reduce exposure to diesel price fluctuations. However, unverified performance metrics and the high starting price mean real-world adoption depends on grid reliability and local energy costs. The next phase will require independent testing of operational costs and range in field conditions to confirm whether this prototype delivers on its promise of reducing energy dependency for smallholder farming.
