FAA Begins DC Air Traffic AI Rollout
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will launch its SMART AI system for air traffic management in the Washington, DC airspace on September 21, 2026. This marks the start of a 12-year contract worth $875 million with Air Space Intelligence, which manages over 40 percent of U.S. air traffic through airline partnerships. SMART targets three major airports in the DC area initially, using AI to predict traffic flows and identify conflicts based on schedules, weather, and airspace capacity.
