Factory robots now exceed 5 million worldwide

Global industrial robot installations reached 5 million units in 2025, driving cost reductions in goods production while accelerating job losses in U.S. manufacturing.

Global industrial robot installations reached 5,000,000 units in 2025, a 9% increase from 2024. China deployed 354,200 robots, while the U.S. added 38,400 units—representing 80% of global activity when combined with Japan, South Korea, Germany, and China. The food sector saw 30% higher robot installations in 2025, and demand in metal, plastics, chemicals, and electronics quintupled from 2015 to 2025. This growth, concentrated in automotive and electronics manufacturing, directly lowers production costs through scale economies and efficiency gains. However, U.S. manufacturing lost 68,000 jobs between December 2024 and December 2025, highlighting a friction point in labor displacement. Projections indicate 655,000 additional robot installations this year and up to 806,000 by 2029. For goods abundance, this scale reduces production costs for essential items like food and electronics—making them more accessible as factories automate toward cheaper, higher-volume output. Watch for how labor adjustments in manufacturing regions might offset cost savings, especially as humanoid robots (7,000 sold globally in 2025) expand. All figures are from the International Federation of Robotics' 2025 data release, with U.S. job losses sourced from federal labor statistics.
