FireSat Satellites Reach Orbit to Spot Wildfires While They Are Still Small

Three Google-backed satellites launched to detect fires as small as five meters across, aiming to catch them before they explode.

Three FireSat satellites launched into orbit on July 7, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The program is backed by Google and managed by the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance, with satellites built by California-based Muon Space. After a three-month testing period, the trio will feed wildfire data to fire agencies, covering fire-prone regions at least twice a day. Google contributed over $15 million to the deployment and the Bezos Earth Fund committed $26 million.

Each satellite uses multispectral imaging to spot fires as small as five by five meters through smoke and clouds. A single Protoflight satellite launched in March 2025 collected more than one million images. Early adopter agencies in California, Colorado, Australia, and Portugal are set to use the data this year. The plan is hourly global imagery by 2029, and every 20 minutes once a constellation of more than 50 satellites is in place in the early 2030s.

This touches security and the commons directly: catching fires when they are still small is the difference between a contained incident and a disaster. Earth Fire Alliance estimates an hourly revisit rate could save over $1 billion in damage, prevent nearly 22 million tons of carbon emissions, and protect 3,500 homes and 1.3 million acres. The context is stark, with Canada reporting nearly 900 active fires and smoke exposing more than 100 million people to hazardous air.

The caveats matter. Data flows only after the three-month test later in 2026, and the damage and emissions figures are Alliance estimates, not measured results. What to watch is whether early agency use during this fire season demonstrates faster detection in practice.
