First US Grid-Connected Wave Energy Testing Site Begins Operations

PacWave South opened on August 27, 2026, as the first US grid-connected open-ocean wave energy test facility. Oregon State University leads operations, with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory serving as foundational partner. The site operates under a 25-year Federal Energy Regulatory Commission license and connects to Oregon State University’s onshore monitoring facility near Driftwood Beach State Park. Located 7 miles offshore at depths of 213 to 256 feet, it features four test berths each equipped with a 5-megawatt subsea transmission cable. Pre-permitted for up to 20 wave energy converters, PacWave South is designed specifically for commercial-scale testing under US Department of Energy funding.

This facility directly reduces barriers to marine energy commercialization by enabling real-world testing at scale. Its grid connection and regulatory alignment with international standards (per ISO and IEC) ensure data compatibility for commercial markets, accelerating the transition from prototype to operational wave energy systems.
