Formo Targets 2-4 Tons Monthly of Lab-Grown Casein for Next Year's Scale-Up

German startup Formo plans to scale precision-fermented casein protein production to 2-4 tons monthly by next year, with FDA clearance expected within weeks.

German startup Formo will scale production of precision-fermented casein protein to 2-4 tons monthly by next year, following its decision to close consumer cheese and koji fermentation operations to focus exclusively on this protein. The company expects an FDA no questions letter within weeks as of September 16, 2026, after engineering E. coli to produce casein with superior foaming and emulsification properties. Formo’s alpha-S1 casein has self-affirmed GRAS status in the US and is being developed for B2B applications like ready-to-drink products and protein snacks through partnerships with RX Food Ingredients.

This shift toward performance-driven production—rather than sustainability or ethical narratives—aims to lower costs for dairy alternatives by optimizing downstream processing efficiency. Formo’s engineered approach could reduce reliance on traditional dairy while maintaining nutritional functionality, potentially making plant-based proteins more affordable for mass-market applications.

If Formo achieves hundreds of tons of sales volume, it could enable cheaper, scalable casein production that reduces costs for sustainable dairy alternatives. However, full commercial integration beyond co-manufacturing requires significant sales volume, and early digestion rate claims need additional scientific validation. The next critical milestone is FDA clearance, which depends on current regulatory review status, before this technology can meaningfully impact food affordability.
