Researchers detected Ophiocordyceps fungi in moss samples at Brazil's Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve (2026), finding 19 infected insects—11 attached directly to mosses—within ant graveyards. DNA evidence confirmed the fungus also exists in mosses adjacent to biting sites. The study proposes this moss-based habitat helps the fungus endure host scarcity, explaining why infected hosts die on mosses rather than other surfaces.
