Geely's 4.5-minute EV charging system outpaces BYD's in real-world tests
Geely launched its fifth-generation Smart Charging Station in Ningbo on September 23, 2026, demonstrating real-world performance with Lynk & Co 10 and Zeekr 001 vehicles. These tests achieved 10% to 70% charging in 4 minutes 30 seconds—faster than BYD's second-generation Blade Battery system, which takes 5 minutes for the same charge under similar conditions. The station delivers 2,250 kW peak power, supported by Geely's Shendun Golden Battery technology that handles 12C charging rates. Geely also claims its lithium-ion pulse restoration technology extends battery cycle life by up to 20% through proprietary testing.
This speed advantage stems from the station's high-power output and battery chemistry optimized for rapid cycling. While the 4.5-minute figure represents a specific vehicle and test condition, it directly addresses a critical friction in EV adoption: charging wait times. In regions with limited infrastructure, faster charging reduces mobility barriers by enabling more frequent use without extended downtime.
For mobility access in underdeveloped areas, this system could make EVs more practical by cutting charging time from hours to minutes. However, real-world results may vary significantly by vehicle model and environmental factors. Geely's battery life claim also relies on their internal testing protocols, not independent validation. The next step is scaling this technology beyond Ningbo to verify its impact on infrastructure-constrained communities.
