GenBio, a Palo Alto, California startup co-founded by 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate David Baker, launched AIDO Cell—a virtual cell AI model in early-stage development. The system simulates human cells across biological scales, supporting K562 (chronic myeloid leukemia-derived) and HepG2 (liver tumor-derived) cell lines. It can model cellular responses to drugs and interventions while using feedback mechanisms to prevent error accumulation across scales. GenBio describes this as a functional demonstration, not a complete solution, with current capabilities limited to two cell types. The model follows a three-stage development path: foundation models, cross-modality linking, and system alignment.

This work could reduce drug discovery costs for diseases where targeted therapies are needed, such as cancers with specific genetic markers.
