Google Maps starts ordering the food instead of finding the restaurant

Ask Maps can now place food orders through Square, Toast and Uber Eats, book hotels and find event tickets. US only, rolling out, with personal data off by default.

Google has added agentic features to Maps. Ask Maps can now place food orders through supported platforms including Square, Toast and Uber Eats, book hotels by handing off to a partner's website, and find event tickets. Those three are rolling out to users in the United States. A live transit widget, conversation memory and a feature called Personal Intelligence are rolling out to all markets where Ask Maps is available. Personal Intelligence is off by default.

The shift being attempted is from a directory to an agent. A map that tells you where the restaurant is competes with other maps; a map that completes the transaction sits between you and the merchant, and that position is where the margin lives. This is the same move being attempted across every consumer surface right now, and Maps has an unusually strong hand because the intent is already unambiguous when you search for a place.

For a site tracking what gets cheaper, the honest reading is that nothing did today. There is no published user count, no fee schedule, no merchant terms and no evidence yet that an agentic order costs a restaurant less than a delivery app order does. Convenience moving to the consumer and cost moving off the small business are different outcomes, and this launch does not tell us which one is happening. Worth watching, worth scoring a 2.
