Home battery uses sodium instead of lithium, launching in September
German startup Revolta has unveiled a high-voltage home battery built on sodium-ion chemistry rather than lithium. The modular system uses 2.0 kWh blocks, and up to 10 can be wired in parallel for 20 kWh total. Each module weighs 19 kg, runs at 450 V DC, and claims efficiency above 95 percent. The company presented it at The smarter E fair in Munich and plans an official launch in September, starting in Germany.
The technical details are modest but real. Energy density is 105 Wh/kg, charge and discharge power ranges from 0.6 to 1.2 kW depending on state of charge, and the unit carries an IP65 rating with noise under 40 dB. Revolta says the battery can sit in standby for over a year without recharging, and that setup is plug-and-play over the air via a phone app or Bluetooth.
The abundance angle is the chemistry. Sodium is far more abundant and less supply-constrained than lithium, so a residential battery that avoids lithium entirely could ease one of the pinch points that keeps home storage expensive. Cheaper, widely sourced storage makes rooftop solar more useful and household energy more self-sufficient.
What to watch: the standby and cost claims come from the company and are not independently verified. The list of compatible inverters is still growing as manufacturers grant approvals, and the September launch and 2027 sales network are stated plans, not results. Sodium-ion's lower energy density also means bigger, heavier packs for the same capacity.
