In August 2026, GeoPura deployed hydrogen power units at Port of Tilbury on the Thames. The system delivered 300 kW through five Ballard fuel cells and charged a commercial battery-electric vessel at the port. This vessel was not hydrogen-powered. The demonstration produced approximately 1 MWh of usable electricity from 3.1 MWh of input electricity to electrolysis. It addressed port power constraints where berths require instantaneous high-power charging (hundreds of kW to megawatts) exceeding grid capacity.

The system’s value lies in its ability to provide rapid, high-power charging at ports where grid capacity is insufficient. This solves a specific technical constraint for temporary vessel charging needs. However, the demonstration does not constitute commercial-scale deployment. Hydrogen solutions have higher efficiency penalties than direct battery charging for maritime applications, and the port power constraint addressed is real but hydrogen is not the optimal approach for this use case. Commercial viability requires repeat deployment metrics including vessel count, megawatt-hours supplied, delivered electricity cost, and adoption by other ports. This technology remains a demonstration solution for niche port power challenges rather than a broadly scalable maritime energy transition.
