Hydrogen's Attention Outpaces Real Deployment
Hydrogen received 114 announcements versus batteries' 206 in 2022-2025, yet deployment lags significantly. China reported 366,000 electric heavy trucks operating by late 2025—over 20 times the global 18,000 fuel-cell trucks. Similarly, China deployed 680,000 electric transit buses versus just 15,000 fuel-cell buses globally. Battery electric passenger vehicles surged to 13 million sales in 2025, dwarfing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles at 16,000. Commercialization metrics further reveal hydrogen's slower progress: its milestones averaged 4.40 on a commercialization ladder versus batteries' 5.97, with only 40% of hydrogen milestones representing scaled deployment—compared to 82% for batteries.
This gap risks misallocating resources toward hydrogen when batteries already dominate operational scale. The attention-to-deployment mismatch suggests hydrogen's current trajectory may not deliver the clean energy solutions it promises without massive, proven infrastructure investment. For abundance, this means transport electrification could stall if funding shifts prematurely toward hydrogen pilots rather than battery-ready systems.
