MANY MINDEDHypercar drivetrain shrinks to suitcase size
Kosmera has unveiled a 3,110-hp electric drivetrain using four axial-flux motors—each delivering 1,555 hp per axle—that fits inside a 20-inch suitcase. The system targets 36.78 hp/lb power density and uses 1,200-volt architecture for millisecond-level torque control. Developed by subsidiary Axion Power, it’s designed for Kosmera’s Star Matrix hypercar but remains in pre-development with patent review underway.
This extreme engineering doesn’t move basic needs abundance today. Hypercars like the Star Matrix target luxury markets, not universal access. While such high-density systems could eventually lower costs for energy-intensive mobility tech, the current phase—patent review and prototype testing—means it’s irrelevant to free, basic transportation. The drivetrain’s focus on performance over affordability ensures it won’t reduce friction for everyday mobility needs.
