Icarus Robotics Tests Robot in Microgravity for ISS Mission
Icarus Robotics conducted four parabolic flights from September 9 to 11, 2026, totaling 66 parabolas and generating 2 cumulative minutes of weightlessness. This testing campaign, performed in Canada after a US parabolic flight operator suspension, focused on three critical systems for its Joy robot: manipulation, state estimation, and flight control. The robot features seven degrees of freedom robotic arms with adaptive pinch grippers designed for satellite maintenance and space logistics. Joy is scheduled for a 2027 launch to the International Space Station as Joyride-1 under a mission management agreement with Voyager Technologies, with hardware handover to NASA planned for January 2027.
The testing demonstrates progress toward cost-effective space operations, potentially reducing expenses for satellite servicing and orbital logistics. This matters because reliable, affordable space maintenance could lower costs for critical services like global internet infrastructure and weather monitoring that many currently pay for. However, Icarus noted flight control testing in microgravity was more challenging than expected compared to ISS operations, and software performance upgrades are required before final handover to NASA. The US testing bottleneck also highlights supply chain risks for space technology development.
