Italian startup shows humanoid robot covered in sensing skin

Generative Bionics unveiled Gene.01, a humanoid with full-body tactile skin, and is open-sourcing the robot model.

Generative Bionics has unveiled Gene.01, a humanoid robot the company says it built from concept to a functional sensorized platform in six months. The robot features full-body distributed tactile skin that detects touch, temperature, proximity, and force, driven by what the company calls physical AI that integrates body, mechanics, and intelligence. It debuted at AMD Advancing AI 2026, led by CEO Daniele Pucci.

The company, based in Genoa and spun out of the Italian Institute of Technology in 2024, is positioning Gene.01 as a base platform for specialized humanoids across logistics, manufacturing, public safety, inspection, and healthcare. It is open-sourcing the robot model via PyPI, conda-forge, and the ROS build farm, and is working with Germany's Synapticon on an EU-protected actuation stack. A collaboration with shipbuilder Fincantieri includes a welding humanoid for shipyard work. The startup raised €70 million (about $81.2 million) in late 2025 to fund development and its first production plant.

Full-body touch sensing matters for general-purpose labor because it lets a robot work safely alongside people and handle objects it can feel rather than only see. If that capability generalizes, the same hardware could shift between warehouse, factory, and care tasks, which is what would make robot labor broadly cheap rather than narrowly specialized.

The caveats are large. Performance, safety, and collaboration claims come from the company, the robot is newly unveiled with its U.S. debut this week, and a production plant is still being built. What to watch is independent testing and whether the open-source release draws real developer use.
