J&J's Ottava surgical robot builds four arms into the operating table
Johnson & Johnson MedTech unveiled Ottava, a surgical robot the company describes as the world's first table-integrated soft-tissue robotics system, following FDA de novo authorization. Instead of the bulky boom-and-cart setups common in robotic surgery, Ottava builds four robotic arms directly into the operating table; the arms tuck beneath it when unused and move into predefined positions at the push of a button. J&J says the design takes up 30 to 50 percent less space than existing systems.
The system includes a two-in-one needle driver with separate 'cut only' and 'suture only' modes, addressing a practical problem: J&J cites a survey where 83 percent of surgeons reported at least one inadvertent suture cut per month. The surgeon works from a console designed for upright seated posture with saveable personal settings, and Ottava connects to J&J's Polyphonic digital ecosystem for data and training. Initial indications cover general procedures including gastric bypass, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, and several others.
Why it moves abundance: operating-room space and equipment footprint are real constraints on where robotic surgery can be offered. A system that folds into the table could lower the barrier for smaller or space-limited facilities to adopt it, widening access to procedures that currently require dedicated robotic suites.
The caveats: the space-saving and survey figures come from J&J itself, and this unveiling is largely a photo showcase rather than performance data. Watch for independent clinical outcomes and how adoption plays out across hospital sizes.
