Lenovo ships a laptop using an inkjet-printed OLED panel

Lenovo's Legion R9000P is billed as the first laptop with an inkjet-printed OLED display, a manufacturing method claimed to be cheaper than the standard.

Lenovo announced the Legion R9000P, described as the world's first laptop to use an inkjet-printed OLED display. The 16-inch panel runs at 240 Hz and covers more than 99% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It is made by TCL CSOT, a subsidiary of Chinese electronics maker TCL, currently the only manufacturer producing OLED screens using the inkjet printing technique.

The significance is in the process. Inkjet-printed OLED, or IJP, deposits the light-emitting material by printing it, rather than the vacuum thermal evaporation method used in conventional OLED production. IJP is claimed to be cheaper and simpler, with higher yields and better brightness. TCL CSOT has mass-produced 5.5-generation IJP OLED since 2024 and has begun building 8.6-generation production capacity.

If the cost claims hold at scale, high-end displays become less of a premium feature. The same panel reportedly appears in a 27-inch 4K monitor, suggesting the technology can span sizes. Cheaper manufacturing of good OLED panels would lower the price of a class of screens that has stayed expensive, making sharp, fast displays more widely affordable across laptops and monitors.

The caveats are real. Lenovo has not disclosed the full specifications or the price of the R9000P, so the actual consumer cost is unknown. The brightness and yield improvements are the technology's promises, not independent test results. And the monitor's panel origin is inferred from matching specifications, not confirmed by the manufacturer.
