Livermore spinoff sets a laser-fusion path to a mid-2030s power plant

Inertia, spun off from Lawrence Livermore, raised $450 million and outlined a roadmap toward grid-scale laser fusion by the mid-2030s.

Inertia Enterprises, a fusion startup spun off from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has shared a 10-point commercialization roadmap. The company raised a $450 million Series A earlier in 2026 and aims to build a grid-scale power plant by the mid-2030s. It uses laser-driven inertial confinement fusion, the approach Livermore developed over six decades and roughly $30 billion in US research, achieving scientific breakeven in 2022.

The engineering gap is stark. The National Ignition Facility makes each fuel target by hand and uses about a dozen per year; a commercial plant would need to fire lasers at a fresh target roughly ten times per second, requiring about a million fuel pellets a day. The best NIF shot yielded a gain just over four times the laser energy, while the roadmap targets more than 25 times. Inertia plans to complete core laser and target manufacturing components by mid-next year, integrate subsystems over two to three years, start building a first plant around 2030, and generate power by the mid-2030s.

If it works, fusion offers clean, effectively limitless baseload energy — the deepest lever on energy abundance there is. That is the prize behind the funding.

The honesty is in the caveats. The timelines are the company's own projections. No fusion startup has yet achieved scientific breakeven, and CEO Jeff Lawson acknowledges the lab's current technology is uneconomical in its present form. This is a roadmap, not a running plant.
