Longevity Study Reveals Immune Cells That Fight Cancer in Centenarians

A University of Osaka study found higher levels of cancer-targeting immune cells in people living past 100, with potential implications for aging populations.

A 2026 study published in *Cell Reports* analyzed blood samples from 28 Japanese participants aged 70–110 years. It found significantly higher median proportions of cytotoxic CD4 T cells (CD4 CTLs) in supercentenarians (aged 110+) compared to younger groups: 17.6% versus 4% in those aged 70–90. Among the 10 centenarians (100–109 years), the median CD4 CTL proportion was 9.6%. The research also noted that in one centenarian participant, about half of their CD4 CTLs were clonal—derived from a single progenitor cell—while younger participants showed 33% clonal CD4 CTLs. The study observed that these CD4 CTLs lost surface proteins CD27 and CD28 during differentiation, suggesting a mechanism for immune resilience in supercentenarians.

This pattern may inform targeted cancer therapies for aging populations, as CD4 CTLs directly attack cancer cells. However, the findings apply specifically to Japanese individuals and do not establish causation between CD4 CTL levels and exceptional longevity. The small sample size (28 participants) and regional focus limit generalizability to global populations. Researchers caution that supercentenarians in other regions may exhibit different immune profiles. The study’s next steps involve larger trials to determine whether these immune traits could be harnessed for therapeutic interventions in aging.
