Maine University AI Initiative Aims to Strengthen Grids Against Cyber Threats and Storms
The University of Maine’s research team, led by Assistant Professor Prabuddha Chakraborty, is developing AI-driven tools to strengthen electrical grids against cyber threats and extreme weather disruptions. Funded by a $2.4 million two-year U.S. Department of Energy EPSCoR grant, the project collaborates with universities in Hawaii, North Dakota, and Puerto Rico to address cybersecurity barriers like hardware security, anomaly detection, and microgrid simulations. It specifically targets grid vulnerabilities seen in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, aiming to improve reliability through self-healing systems and real-world utility partnerships. The initiative also includes workforce training to build capacity for maintaining secure smart grids.
This work targets the critical need for resilient energy infrastructure in regions disproportionately impacted by climate disasters and cyber threats. If successfully deployed, AI-enhanced grid systems could reduce outage costs and prevent cascading failures in vulnerable areas—potentially making reliable electricity more accessible where traditional systems struggle.
What remains to be seen: Whether utility partnerships will materialize to transition these AI tools into real-world grids, and whether the project’s focus on 'vulnerable communities' translates to measurable impact without specific population metrics. The research is still in development, with a published date of August 19, 2026—a future date that highlights the project’s current experimental stage.
