Medtronic previews AI compute layer for the operating room
Medtronic has previewed Touch Surgery Aide, an AI compute platform built to process surgical video in real time inside the operating room. It powers the company's broader Touch Surgery Ecosystem, which spans pre-operative planning and training, intra-operative tele-mentoring and tele-proctoring, and post-operative AI insights. The platform uses computer vision, multimodal AI, and accelerated inference, developed in collaboration with NVIDIA using its Holoscan, CUDA, and TensorRT technologies.
The first application running on the platform, called Instrument Exit Point, has FDA clearance. It gives surgeons a visual notification when instruments move beyond the visible field of view on the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. Hugo itself was cleared for urologic procedures in December 2025, and Medtronic filed 510(k) submissions in June 2026 to expand it into general and gynecologic specialties. The company says Hugo has been used in tens of thousands of procedures across more than 35 countries.
If the platform delivers, real-time guidance and tele-mentoring could widen access to surgical expertise, letting more hospitals reach outcomes once tied to a handful of specialized centers. Making training and intra-operative support software-driven is how surgical skill becomes more evenly distributed rather than concentrated.
What to watch is whether clearances beyond urology arrive and whether outcome claims hold up in independent use. For now, Touch Surgery Aide is an early-stage preview and Instrument Exit Point is described as a first step. Claims about workflow and outcomes come from Medtronic executives, not independent study.
