Memphis Data Center Battery System Approaches Grid Connection

xAI (now SpaceXAI) installed 720 Tesla Megapack units at its Memphis Colossus 2 data center hub, visible in a July 11, 2026 satellite image. The system has a 2.8 gigawatt-hour capacity with discharge ranging from 720 to 1,400 megawatts. Riley Trettel, SpaceXAI’s energy developer, described it as the nation’s largest battery during a Tennessee Valley Authority board meeting on August 20, 2026. TVA approved direct grid connection on that date, but the system remains unconnected to the grid and requires additional board approval to activate later in 2026.

The battery’s scale—larger than California’s Edwards & Sanborn solar plant—aims to improve renewable energy integration for the Memphis region. By storing excess solar and wind power, it could stabilize electricity supply for local residents and businesses. However, the system’s grid connection status is conditional on TVA approval, and its exact capacity is disputed between 2,000 MW (Memphis Light) and 3.3 GWh (Trettel).

This project moves energy reliability for Memphis residents and businesses toward a more resilient grid. If connected, it would reduce reliance on fossil fuels during peak demand while supporting renewable adoption. But the battery’s environmental impact remains contested: SpaceXAI operates 69 unpermitted mobile gas generators at the site, facing a pending lawsuit from the Southern Environmental Law Center. What matters next is whether TVA approves the grid connection by year’s end and how capacity disputes resolve before the system becomes operational.
