Microalgae Facility Scales Fish Oil Alternatives
Algiecel has established a 5,500-liter industrial-scale microalgae facility at Novonesis’s Kalundborg site in Denmark. The facility currently operates 3,240 liters of active microalgae cultivation—more than four times the pilot system’s 700 liters—using captured CO2 from an on-site biogas plant. Algiecel raised 60 million kroner ($9 million) in 2024 and expects to produce 12 tonnes of microalgal biomass annually starting next year. This facility operates within Novonesis’s Kalundborg site, one of the world’s largest enzyme manufacturing plants, positioning it to scale omega-3 alternatives for pet food and cosmetics.
The facility directly addresses fish oil supply constraints. Current fish oil supply data shows a 31% decline below 12-month levels as of early June 2026, while the global omega-3 market is valued at $3.3 billion in 2026 and projected to reach $5.4 billion by 2033. By producing fish oil alternatives without depleting wild fisheries, Algiecel’s system enables more abundant marine resources for human and animal use.
This moves abundance in the GOODS sector by reducing pressure on wild fisheries for omega-3s—a critical nutrient for health and nutrition—while creating a scalable, low-impact alternative. The CO2 reuse and industrial integration also advance THE COMMONS by demonstrating how waste streams can fuel resource production without new environmental extraction.
What to watch: Algiecel’s ability to maintain production rates amid fish oil supply volatility and the unverified 2048 ocean collapse projection referenced in the source. The 2048 projection remains unconfirmed by Algiecel and is not part of this facility’s operational scope.
